Lifetime Opportunity for Beutel
Feature Photo credit Geoff Schneider It was a tough decision for Nate Beutel, and an easy one at the same time. Last May, Beutel was hired as assistant coach and basketball operations director under new Buffalo women’s head coach Kristen Sharkey. After 13 glorious seasons at SUNY Niagara (former NCCC), Nate was ready for a fresh challenge. Joining UB, a Division I program in full rebuild, seemed ideal. A tireless recruiter, he dove right in, hitting the road, searching out pl

ECC football on the rise
Early in 2021, Mike Kemp was in a coaching limbo. He was the part-time, interim head football coach at Erie Community College. A year into Covid, however, Kemp wasn’t certain that ECC football would survive the pandemic. The 2020 season had been canceled because of Covid.. Many of the ECC coaches had been laid off. The budget had been cut. Most of the players had scattered, uncertain where the football program was headed. “I wasn’t sure the program was going to continue,” K

Niagara closes out a chilly weekend
By Budd Bailey Looking for a little relief from this historic cold snap in Western New York? Don’t count on the area’s sports teams for a respite. In particular, the area’s men’s college basketball teams were particularly unsuccessful in providing a diversion. Our Big Four of Canisius, Niagara, St. Bonaventure and the University at Buffalo played six home games from Friday to Sunday. They combined to go 0-6. Brrrrr. There was bad news elsewhere, as you might know. The Sabres

Slow start dooms UB in loss
By Budd Bailey No one was too happy about the way the University at Buffalo’s men’s basketball team played on Saturday afternoon. Especially the coach. “Our entire team is disappointed about the way we came out today,” said head coach George Halcovage after a discouraging 95-83 loss to Ohio University in Alumni Arena. “I don’t think we brought the proper fight to this game, the proper focus. We’ve got to learn from this. … We have to all stick together. We have to take pride

Canisius falls a touch short again
By Budd Bailey There hasn’t been a large amount of sunshine and warmth around Western New York. You may have noticed that. The gloom might be a little more amplified in the Koessler Athletic Center these days. Canisius put up a good fight but couldn’t close it out again, this time to Marist by a score of 88-86 in overtime. After opening the 2026 portion of the schedule with three straight wins, the Golden Griffins (8-14, 3-8 MAAC) have dropped six in a row in January. The las

UB's attempt at winning slips away
By Budd Bailey Sometimes they fall, sometimes they don’t. The University at Buffalo’s men’s basketball team knew about that entering the final nine seconds of its game with Massachusetts Friday night. The Minutemen held a 68-67 lead, but the Bulls had the ball and thus has the chance to end a four-game losing streak before 2,310 in Alumni Arena. The designed play was no surprise: get the ball to its best offensive creator, Daniel Freitag, and let him penetrate for a shot for

Akron's flying start overwhelms UB
By Budd Bailey Outside of Alumni Arena in Amherst at 6:40 on Tuesday night, it was snowing a bit, and it was cold. Inside of Alumni Arena, it was raining. Raining threes that is. The Akron Zips opened their scoring in the game with the University at Buffalo men’s basketball team with five straight three-point shots. Add a lay-up and a drive to the hoop, and Akron had a 19-2 lead with only seven minutes gone in the game. “Offensively, we played into their hands a little bit,”

Bandits fall short against Ottawa
By Budd Bailey It was a game that was there for the taking. Jeff Teat and his Ottawa Black Bears took it. They scored four straight goals in the fourth quarter to erase a 7-6 lead for the Buffalo Bandits, and held off the Bandits in the final minutes to take a 10-9 win. While Buffalo’s second loss within a week and a drop to .500 (3-3) is a cause for concern, Teat certainly deserves top billing for what happened on Friday night before 17,190 in the Key Bank Center. He scored

Niagara's late burst beats Canisius
By Budd Bailey With 7:39 left to play, it seemed that Canisius had all of the momentum on its side in its rivalry basketball game with Niagara at the Koessler Athletic Center. After a slow start, the Golden Griffins slowly climbed back into the game, and ripped off seven straight points to take a 50-45 lead. After all, as that noted basketball fan Isaac Newton once said (more or less), things going in motion tend to stay in motion. Instead, it was the Purple Eagles that took
