For the second straight night, a game between the Buffalo Bisons and the Syracuse Mets went back and forth. And like the night before, the Bisons won in walk-off fashion.
It’s the second consecutive outing – and the third time this week – that the Bisons emerged victorious via the last hitter of the game. It was done in grand fashion as well.
Spencer Horwitz’s hot hitting continued as he drove in a run on a base hit to kick off the scoring and get the Bisons on the board first. Jordan Luplow then sent one over the outfield wall for a two-run homer to make it 3-0 in the bottom of the first and Tanner Morris got an RBI single in the second to increase the lead to 4-0.
It appeared as if it would be smooth sailing from then out for the Herd. But adversity then struck, as starting pitcher Thomas Hatch was removed from the game after just two innings and replaced by Mitch White. It would be a bullpen game from there on out for the Bisons, and the Mets were too happy to take advantage.
Ronny Mauricio walked with the bases loaded to get the Mets’ first run in, Mark Vientos hit a sacrifice fly to score a runner from third and Jaylin Davis hit a solo home run to left centerfield to close the gap to 4-3. A wild pitch by White then allowed Nick Meyer to cross home plate to tie the contest, and the wheels appeared to be falling off the Bisons’ wagon.
Luke Bard and Brandon Eisert then pitched in relief and helped stop the bleeding until the ninth inning – when Hayden Juenger took the mound. After the Mets loaded the bases, ex-Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez hit a two-run double off the top of the outfield wall to put Syracuse on top 6-4.
Things looked grim for the Herd. But once again, they summoned some last-minute heroics.
After a base hit and a walk, Horwitz drove home a run on a single to bring the Bisons to within one. Luplow then stepped to the plate and hit a three-run blast (his second homer of the night) to left field to win the game for Buffalo.
The victory improves the Herd’s record to 16-21 on the season.
