TONY’S TAKE – BILLS-DOLPHINS THOUGHTS

Updated: Sep 29, 2023

Some thoughts on last night’s game:

1. The ending of that game was a master class in clock management for the Bills. Reminiscent of their final drive against Baltimore earlier this year, Buffalo saved their best for last with an efficient drive and not allowing any time for Miami to come back. Which was perfect timing, given that offensively they were in a bit of a funk in the second half.

2. Over the last couple of years the comparisons that were made the most in regards to Josh Allen were Cam Newton and Ben Roethlisberger. With all due respect to those two, the more accurate comparisons I’ve seen to Allen are Brett Favre and John Elway. Few had the arm strength, mobility and creativity they had, but Allen has it in spades and like Favre, Josh is the ultimate “No, no, no….. Yes, yes!” quarterback. Always making something out of nothing.

3. Going into last night’s game, Tua Tagovailoa’s completion percentage and passer rating drastically decreased against teams that used split safety coverages, and conversely increased against single-high safety coverages. Typically the Bills use much more of the former and not the latter – and of course defenses will mix their coverages up throughout a game – but  it was still a bit concerning that their defense in single-high coverages (Cover One, Three etc.) seemed to not do as hot as their split safety ones (Cover Two, Four, Six etc.). Damar Hamlin didn’t have a great day at the office either and neither did their run defense – both need to get up to par!

4. Stefon Diggs didn’t have a huge game, but it was nice to see Allen’s secondary targets – Dawson Knox, Gabe Davis, etc. step up when called upon. I’m expecting Beasley’s role to increase too the more he gets up to speed.

5. On to Chicago!
